Roborovski dwarf hamsters are small active species with extraordinary personalities though an exception. The Robo hamsters need a lot of care, even if it is hard to tame and handle.

But once you break the barriers, you will love spending time with them during the evening since they spend their day sleeping.

And since they have become more famous, most pet parents look forward to adding this shy species to their families. But before then, you should know everything they need to bring them up correctly.

And this is the right article for you, with explained details about the Roborovski dwarf hamsters.

The Appearance of Roborovski Dwarf Hamster

Roborovski dwarf hamsters are the most miniature animals with great personalities. Most Roborovski hamsters are sandy-colored without a dorsal stripe. However, you will find some Robo hamsters with similar colors on the entire body and others with sandy bodies and lighter faces.

Roborovski hamsters are curious and active pets and love exploring their environment and playing with toys, although they are somewhat shy and easily startled.

Additionally, they love socializing a lot and even love sleeping together. And since they are flighty and have a sensitive temperament, they are not ideal for families with kids.

The Robo hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they spend the rest of the day sleeping and come out at night and evening. Due to that, they are best for people that aren’t available during the day since they can spend time bonding with the Roborovski dwarf hamster in the evening.

Roborovski Dwarf Hamster’sLifespan

The Roborocski dwarf hamsters have a longer lifespan than other hamsters. The Robo hamsters can live for about three to four years of captivity. I know three to four years isn’t a considerable period, but it is ideal for new parents that don’t love long commitments.

However, diet, stress, genetics, environment, and other factors can affect the Robo hamster’s lifespan. So ensure that you treat them right to increase their lifespan. And when in the wild, Roborovsk hamsters can only stay for two years because of their predators.

Size and Weight of Roborovski Dwarf Hamster

The Roborovsk hamsters stretch up to 2” long and weigh about one ounce. During birth, they are less than 1” long. At around two months old, the Roborovsk hamsters reach maturity.

The Roborovski Dwarf Hamster Care

Although Robo hamsters groom themselves, sometimes they can be somewhat messy. If that is the case, use a damp cloth or baby wipes with no scent to clean your hamster. Also, they love the weekly sand bath.

And since the teeth of the Robo hamsters grow continuously, you should always be on the lookout by giving them chewing sticks for hamsters. If the teeth grow too long, you should take them to your vet for trimming.

Diet and Food Requirements

The Roborovski dwarf hamsters are omnivorous by nature. It means that they love eating plants and meat. In the wild, they eat the insects with a typical thoroughfare of seeds, grains, and nuts.

However, getting the right balance for them can be challenging, a reason enough to feed them pellets or a pre-balanced mixture for proper nutrition.

As if that is not enough, you should feed them fresh fruits twice a week, and by all means, avoid providing your Robo hamsters meals with raised water content. But why? Because the small body sizes can’t sustain massive water intake, which can lead to diarrhea.

Health Condition of Roborovski Hamster

Unlike other hamsters, the Roborovski dwarf hamsters are somewhat robust. But it isn’t a reason enough to say that the Roborovski hamsters are impervious to illness. Wet tail is a severe condition in most Robo hamsters; however, it is not common.

The wet tail is a bacterial infection brought by stress and commonly affects the gut. So if you notice a damp bottom on your Robo hamster and your pet refuses water, it’s time to seek your vet’s medical attention. The condition may cause death to your lovely Roborovski hamster.

Also, the Roborovski dwarf hamsters are susceptible to allergies compared to other hamsters. Their beddings are the first culprit to Robo hamster allergies. To avoid or solve such problems, do a quick cage cleaning and change their bedding.

Female Vs. Male Roborovski Hamster

It is hard to tell which Roborovski is female or male if you have yet to learn what to look for. The male Robo hamsters have a yellow scent patch at the bellies. Besides, the male is more active and smaller than the female.

And the females are somewhat larger without a scent patch like males. Also, they are more dominant, and after breeding, they become bullies and can kill the males. Due to that, you may need to monitor your cage or separate them when the female is pregnant.

Final Thoughts

The Roborovski dwarf hamsters are incredible little species with extraordinary personalities. And if you are looking for small pets, then they are all you need. They are good companions once tamed, however challenging it is to tame them.
